The class started in the same fashion as the last time I observed this class. There was an interactive title slide introducing the topic. The best part of this class was how engaged the students were, there were some that didn’t participate as much as others, but that is to be expected in any classroom environment.
Her use of the breakout rooms was very effective and does help ease some students from the pressures of speaking to the whole class, plus, the classroom shouldn’t just be the teacher talking the whole time. I believe that students should have time to work with their peers and present their own ideas in a bit less of a stressful situation.
Any time she asked a question, she did rephrase in different ways to ensure that the students were able to understand what it was that she was asking. That was a very good take away and something I plan to incorporate into my future lessons.
The way she ended the class that night was interesting and is something that I think would only be implemented in a class such as the conversation club. She got the class to say what they would like the next class to be about as an exit ticket. From a teacher’s perspective, that is a really good way to see where the class’s interests lie; some of the students wanted to focus on how you would go through a certain scenario, which is perfect if you’re teaching an English for a specific purpose class. I feel that with enough creativity, there may be a way to add that into a general class, perhaps for an independent or group project.
